The 150th Anniversary of The Battle of the Little Bighorn

What a year. First, it’s 150 years since the Battle of the
Little Bighorn. And now we’ve just celebrated 250 years of
the United States of America! Flags are flying everywhere,
BUT, the new visitors center at the Little Bighorn Battlefield
won’t be finished until late summer. You can still visit the
battlefield, the store, and the sites, so do so if you can.
There have been many articles and TV programs everywhere
about our United States' celebrations. I have something to
celebrate also. My article on my grandmother Jessamine’s photos
of the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn was just
published in “Montana, the Magazine of Western History.” It’s
the Summer 2026 issue. If you so desire, a copy is available
by calling Karen Ogden, publications manager, at the magazine.

What I love about the article is the full page spread of two of
many Jessamine’s photos. They pull you into the events of that
weekend. Another plus are photos of Custer’s route through Davis
Creek, the Little Thompson Creek divide, and the route down Reno
Creek to the battlefield area. This helps you visualize how the
soldiers arrived at the encampment. Historically important also
are her photos of the survivors of that important battle as they
attended the 50th Anniversary event.
I’m forever grateful for grandmother’s inspiration that has led me
to this point. As we say in several of the genealogical societies
I belong to, “Remember on whose shoulders we stand.” Indeed,
this is a very appropriate quote for our country’s 250th year.

Jessamine had a way of capturing the spirit of the battlefield.
